Comments:The species range covers most of o-CenCo and o-NorCo. It grows on coastal dunes, headlands, and terraces. This CA native is considered an "exotic" north of Manchester Beach in Mendocino Co. In Hum-boldt Co. it has a history of being planted to stabilize and (Miller 1988). It is very successful at colonizing and enriching the sand, and as a result is changing vegetation patterns. Yellow bush lupine stands in Humboldt Co. are being managed by annual removal to restore Sand-verbena - beach bursage series stands and enhance populations of rare species (Pickart et al. 1989).
Plot based descriptions:Hektner & Foin (1977) define one association at Sea Ranch on terraces in Sonoma Co.; Holton & Johnson (1979) two associations at Point Reyes National Seashore on sand in Marin Co.; Duebendorfer (1989), LaBanca (1993), Parker (1974) in Major and Barbour 1977a) three associations at Humboldt Bay on sand in Humboldt Co. o-NorCo.
Series Association:Duebendorfer (1989): Yellow bush lupine-ripgut association [as Lupine/grass type]. Holton & Johnson (1979): Yellow bush lupine as [= LaBanca (1994)], Yellow bush lupine-heather goldenbush association. Hektner & Foin (1977): Yellow bush lupine-vernal grass association. Parker (1974): Yellow bush lupine-California figwort association.
