Comments:The term scrub oak has been used for several shrubby live oaks. The Jepson Manual applies the name Quercus dumosa, Nuttall scrub oak, to a rare (a CNPS List 1B plant) SoCo species (Skinner & Pavlik 1994). Referen in the ecological literature to Q. dumosa are more appropriately Q. ber which ranges through much of Cis-CA. Desert scrub oak, interior live oak, and the rarer Muller oak, Tucker oak, and Palmer oak are also called scrub oaks. Careful identification of the oaks in a stand will be necessary to correctly assign them to a series. [ see California juniper series, Interior live oak shrub series]. This series definition follows Gordon & White (1994). If either scrub oak or birchleaf mountain-mahogany cover is > 60%, then the stand is a member of the Scrub oak series or Birchleaf mountain-mahogany series. Stands with localized species as Cleve d monkeyflower (a CNPS List 4 plant), Dunn mariposa lily (a CNPS List 1B plant), or white coast ceanothus (a CNPS List 2 plant) may occur in this series (Skinner & Pavlik 1994). Keeler-Wolf (1990e) qualitatively describes stands at Cahuilla Mountain RNA n River Co. m-PenR.
Plot based descriptions:Gordon & White (1994) define four associations in So-CA.
