Upland information: Uplands:slopes; raised stream benches and terraces. Soils sandstone, schist-derived. The national inventory of wetland plants (Reed 1988) lists western hemlock as a FACU.

Comments:This series is restricted in extent in Nor-CA, but is extensive in OR and WA. In CA stands of the series are mainly represented by stands logged two or more times. This species is also present, even important, in redwood and Sitka spruce stands as well see Douglas-fir -tanoak series, Redwood series, Sitka spruce series].
Plot based descriptions:Westman & Whittaker (1975) define a coastal ravine Spruce-hemlock type in Mendocino Co., Keeler-Wolf (1987d) in Keeler-Wolf (1990e) a Western hemlock subtype of Port-Orford-cedar - Douglas-fir - western hemlock forests at Upper Goose Creek candidate RNA in Del Norte Co., NDDB has plot data on a Mad River stand in Humboldt Co. o-NorCo.
