Comments:In The Jepson Manual , Sitka alder is treated as a subspecies ( Alnus viridis ssp. sinuata ) of a widespread North America and Eurasia species. The elevational and regional ranges of the montane alders, mountain alder ( Alnus incana ), and Sitka alder, differ in California. They rarely occur in the same stand [see Mountain alder series]. This series is best developed along m-KlaR streams. Stands of the Montane wetland habitat and Subalpine wetland habitat occur in similar environmental conditions. Sitka alder tolerates cooler and shadier riparian situations than most willows.
