Stream and river back-waters, banks, bottoms, floodplains, mouths, terraces. Cowardin class: Palustrine forested wetland. Uplands: all aspects. Soils sand-stone, schist-derived. The national inventory of wetland plants (Reed 1988) lists red alder as a FACW.

Comments:Self-perpetuating stands of this series occur on alluvial sites. Temporary stands dominated by red alder establish after logging on upland settings. Douglas-fir, grand fir, redwood, Sitka spruce, and/or western hemlock replace red alder in time. Chain f rn thickets are common in NorCo and l-KlaR stands.

(1986) define one asso-ciation at Stagecoach Hill Azalea Preserve, Newton (1989) describes riparian stands in n. Humboldt Co. o-NorCo; Jimerson (1993) defines one association in Six Rivers National Forest l-KlaR.
