Comments:This series is often considered part of the coastal scrub, which is better thought of as a collection of series. This approach allows stands of similar com-position can be considered regardless of geographic location. Stands of this series make mosaics with Coast live oak and Califor walnut series. Coast bluff scrub is included here. Descriptions differ in plant height and cover from coastal scrub, but contrast little in species composition.
Plot based descriptions:Kirkpatrick & Hutchinson (1977) define two associations in s. CenCo, SoCo.
Series Association:Kirkpatrick & Hutchinson (1977): Purple sage-Califor sagebrush association [= Venturan II (Malanson 1984)], Purple sage-laurel sumac as [= White et al. (1993)].
