Mountain hemlock series
Section: tree Series Dominated by Trees
Series formation:
Series height:<40 m
Series canopy cover:ci
Series ground layer:sa
Elevation range (lower):1500
(upper):   3050
Wetland information:[not available]
Upland information: Uplands:all slopes, but most extensive on north-facing aspects with late-lasting snow; concave slopes; raised stream benches and terraces. Soils commonly granitic-derived. The national inventory of wetland plants (Reed 1988) lists mountain hemlock as a FACU+.
Reference:Mountain hemlock range in CA (Griffin & Critchfield 1972); silvics (Means 1990). Arno (1980), Barbour (1988), Franklin (1980a, 1988), Rundel et al. (1977), Sawyer & Thornburgh (1977).
Comments:Stands included in this series occur north of Sequoia National Park (Parsons 1972), Rundel et al. 1977). At its southern range limit in SN, the species forms local populations mixed with other subalpine conifers, hence mountain hemlock can be important in other subalpine series [ see Lodgepole pine series, Mixed subalpine series, Red fir series, Western white pine series, Whitebark pine series].
Plot based descriptions:Jimerson (1993) defines one association in Six River National Forest, Keeler-Wolf (1982, 1989d) in Keeler-Wolf (1990e) describes stands at Cedar Basin candida te RNA, Keeler-Wolf (1987a) in Keeler-Wolf (1990e) stands at Crater Creek candidate RNA, and Keeler-Wolf (1984b, 1989f), Sawyer & Thornburgh (1971) in Keeler-Wolf (1990e) stands at Sugar Creek candidate RNA in Siskiyou Co., Sawyer & Thornburgh (1977) define three regional associations, Sawyer & Thornburgh (1969) report tree age for stands at Diamond Lake in Siskiyou Co. su-KlaR; Fiedler (1987), Keeler-Wolf (1989g) in Keeler-Wolf (1990e) describe stands at Antelope Creek Lakes candidate RNA, Imper (1988a) in Keeler-Wolf (1990e) defines two associations at Shasta Fir candidate RNA (on Mount Shasta) in Siskiyou Co. CasR; Nachlinger (1988) reports tree density and size for two stands at Lyon Peak/ Needle Peak RNA in Placer Co., Potter (1994) defines two regional associations in c. su-SN, Taylor (1984) one association at Harvey Monroe Hall RNA in Mono Co. su-SN.
