It can grow with Sargent cypress, but McNab cypress tends to grow on upper slopes while Sargent cypress grows on lower slopes and ravines [ see Sargent cypress series]. Both can be found in the same stand.
Plot based descriptions:Keeler-Wolf (1983) in Keeler-Wolf (1990e) reports density and basal area at Frenzel Creek RNA in Colusa Co. i-NorCo. This survey considered the cypress part of his serpentine chaparral. Sargent cypress also grows in this RNA.
