Comments:Fewer than 20 populations are known in CA. Descriptions suggest that elephant tree associates with local series rather than forming one. This species is rare (a CNPS List 2 plant) in CA with most of its range in Mexico. In AZ it is state- listed as highly safeguarded (Skinner & Pavlik 1994).
