Comments:This series is often considered part of the coastal scrub, which is better thought of as a collection of series. This series differs from the other coastal scrub series in having common cacti and Diegan division species (Axelrod 1978). Coast bluff scrub is included here in part. Definitions differ in plant height and cover from coastal scrub, but contrast little in species composition. Stands of localized species as goldenspine cereus (a CNPS List 2 plant), San Diego barrel cactus (a CNPS List 2 plant), Shaw agave (a CNPS List 2 plant) occur in this series (Skinner & Pavlik 1994).
