Upland information: Uplands:slopes in sub-riparian settings. The trees are associated with calcareous soils.

Comments:This tree occurs as groves of 50-100 stems on four southern ChaI. Some 150-300 groves exist on each island. Each grove may represent a clone (Mark Dunn personal communication). Santa Catalina Island ironwood [ Lyonothamnus floribundus ssp. floribundus ] grows on Santa Catalina Island. Santa Cruz Island ironwood, with pinnate leaves [ L. f. ssp. asplenifolius ], grows on Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Clemente Islands. Santa Catalina Island ironwood and Santa Cruz Island ironwood are both rare (CNPS List 1B plants) (Skinner & Pavlik 1994).
