Comments:This series is often considered part of the coastal scrub, which is better thought of as a collection of series. This approach allows stands of comparable composition which can be considered regardless of geographic location. Coast bluff scrub is included here in part. Definitions differ in plant height and cover from coastal scrub, but contrast little in species composition.
Plot based descriptions:Kirkpatrick & Hutchinson (1977) define one association, Malanson (1984) one in SoCo.
Series Association:Kirkpatrick & Hutchinson (1977): California encelia-California sagebrush association. Malanson (1984) California encelia association [as Venturan Ib].
