Comments:This definition follows Gordon & White (1994). This series is often considered part of the coastal scrub, which is better thought of as a collection of series. This approach allows stands of com composition which can be considered regardless of geographic location. Stands of this series differ from the California buckheat series and White sage series in that California buckwheat and white sage are equally important. In addition, more chaparral species occur in stands of this series than in stands of the California buckwheat series or White sage series. Three varieties of Eriogonum fasciculatum grow in the range of coastal scrub. There is some geographic separation of them: E. f. var. f. grows in o-CenCo, E. f. var. polifolium in i-SoCo, but E. f. var. foliolosum is sympatric with them (Axelrod 1978).
Plot based descriptions:Gordon & White (1994) define a California buckwheat-white sage association in SoCo; White (1994b) recognizes this one among seven coastal scrub series in western Riverside Co. in i-SoCo.
