Comments:Many regional descriptions include this series in Creosote bush scrub. Stands of this series often form fine grain mosaics with stands of Creosote bush or Joshua tree series as big galleta may be a common gr ound layer species in shrub or tree dominated stands. In addition, scattered shrubs or trees may be emergent on stands dominated by big galleta. Determination of which layer has the highest cover will determine the proper assignment of the stand [ see Black bush series, Creosote bush series, Joshua tree series, Mojave yucca series]. In the ecological literature big galleta is referred to as Hilaria rigida . The Jepson Manual places big galleta in the genus Pleuraphis .
Plot based descriptions:Minnich et al. (1993) define a Creosote bush/big galleta association [as Creosote bush scrub with galleta grass] at Marine Corps Airground Combat Center in San Bernardino Co. MojD; NDDB has plot data on file for the East Mojave Scenic Area in San Bernardino Co. MojD; nza Borrego Desert State Park in San Diego Co. ColD.
